LAST FREE CONCERT TO BE HELD IN WILDWOOD CREST FOR SEASON

The popular Wildwood Crest Free Summer Music Series is set to come to an exciting end this weekend. Purple Reign, one of the hottest and most sought after bands in the Philadelphia and South Jersey region, will take the stage at Centennial Park on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the final performance of the 2013 Wildwood Crest Free Summer Music Series. Purple Reign returns after a stellar performance in its first-ever appearance in the Crest last summer. Wildwood Crest will host one more evening of live music at Centennial Park in 2014 on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. when Big House takes the stage to kick off the Seafarers Weekend celebration, followed by a beachfront fireworks display at 9 p.m.

GAS STATION BURGLARY BEING INVESTIGATED IN ABSECON

Absecon Police are looking for help in a burglary of a Sunoco station in the community on Sunday. Police found the front of the building had been pried open and entry was made. Suspect entered and stole an undetermined amount of money from the register, cigarettes, and a box of Snickers candy bars. The business was closed at the time of the burglary. ABSECON POLICE INVESTIGATING HOME INVASION ROBBERY

Two suspects are being sought in a home invasion robbery. Absecon Police say the two made off without any items, but were able to escape. Police were called just after midnight on Tuesday morning to a home on Oyster Bay Road. The victims said the suspects threatened the use of a weapon but did not show a weapon in the attempt. TWO INJURED IN HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT

middle policeA North Wildwood woman was arrested for leaving the scene of a hit-and-run. The incident took place along Route 47 in Rio Grande. The Officers quickly discovered that one victim, Ryan Burton (25) of Whitesboro, was struck by the vehicle and thrown to the side of the road. The second victim, Samuel Caraballo (22) of Woodbine, was struck by the vehicle and was thrown up in the air and landed in the back seat of the vehicle. The vehicle was a Kia Sport with a canvass top. The driver was Kristen Schwakoff (25) of North Wildwood. Schwakoff has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury (third degree crime). The crash is still under investigation by the Middle Township Major Crime Unit and Fatal Crash Team.

RIDGEWAY STEPS DOWN AT CAPE MAY TECH BASKETBALL COACH

Cape May Tech has lost its basketball coach for the past 16 seasons. Bob Ridgeway stepped down from the post, according to a report by the Gazette-Leader newspapers. Ridgeway was the longest tenured coach in the school’s history. The school only started playing basketball on the varsity level a couple of years prior to Ridgeway taking over. The school posted four winning seasons during his run as head basketball coach.

ATLANTIC CITY’S TAX BASE CUT IN HALF BY NEXT YEAR

Atlantic City’s tax base will be half of what it was in 2010 next year, according to a new report. Reuters reports that the city will continue to see a drop in ratables following three casinos going out of business, including Revel. The tax base was at $20.5 billion, but could be below $10 billion by 2015. The total tax bill for Atlantic City residents, when you consider school, county, and local, will have risen 85 percent by next year since 2010, according to the story.

PARENTS DOING FINAL PREP FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

WILDWOOD CREST ANNOUNCES LIFEGUARD STAFFING POST-LABOR DAY

250px-Wildwood_Crest_archThe Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol has announced its late-season beach coverage for 2014. All beaches will be open and protected by beach patrol staff on Labor Day weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 1) and on the weekend after Labor Day (Sept. 6-7). Due to limited available staff, nine beaches will be protected from Tuesday, Sept. 2 through Friday, Sept. 5: Lavender, Cardinal, Forget-Me-Not, Primrose, Stockton, Louisville, Denver, Pittsburgh and Washington. Sunday, Sept. 7 will be the last day of the 2014 season for regular lifeguard coverage of the Wildwood Crest beaches. Response teams will be available for emergency calls on the weekends of Sept. 13-14 and Sept. 20-21. As always, the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol strongly urges its beach patrons to swim at lifeguard-protected beaches only.
