Legislation aimed at helping local volunteer fire and ambulance squads advanced in the Senate. The bill sponsored by Senator Jeff Van Drew would ensure that surplus state police vehicles would be given to those volunteer groups to save taxpayer dollars. The measure cleared the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee. Under the bill, volunteer organizations would be notified when a vehicle becomes available. The volunteer fire department or ambulance squad could then request the ownership be transferred to it. If more than one organization requests the vehicle, a lottery would be held to determine ownership.
