COUNTY TO CLOSE TOWNSEND’S INLET BRIDGE NEXT WEEK

The Ocean Drive (CR 619) Bridge over Townsends Inlet is scheduled to be closed to vehicular traffic on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 for a period of approximately three weeks (weather permitting).  The closing of the bridge is necessitated by construction to replace deteriorated bridge railings and to clean and paint the entire bridge railing system.

This project, part of the $4,303,440 Cape May County Bridge Painting Program, was approved by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders on March 16, 2010 and is funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The work at the Bridge is being performed by Allied Painting, Inc. of Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Since August, Allied Painting has been constructing a containment system under the Townsends Inlet Bridge.  The containment system prevents the existing paint system, cleaning materials and the new paint system materials from entering into the environment – particularly the air and water.  Cleaning and painting of the structural steel is expected to begin next month and be completed by early summer 2011.

The other bridge in the Cape May County Bridge Painting Program is the Ocean Drive (CR 619) over Grassy Sound.  Allied Painting is expected to complete the cleaning and painting of the steel surfaces by the end of this year.
