Drone testing will be taking place in New Jersey. Congressman Frank LoBiondo announced the FAA’s plan to pick six national tests sites, of which New Jersey and Virginia jointly applied as one. The states’ joint application was put forth by Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Rutgers University with support from the Governors of New Jersey and Virginia. The William J. Hughes FAA Technical Center will be the lead facilitator of data collected from each of the six test sites
Middle Township Deputy Mayor Tim Donohue announced that the Township will be offering a free rabies clinic on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 at 2:00pm. The clinic will be held at the Middle Township Department of Public Works located at 400 West Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House. The rabies clinic will come in advance of a state-required dog census that will be conducted throughout the Township by the Middle Township Department of Animal Control. 2014 dog licenses will be available at the free rabies clinic. All dogs over six months of age must be licensed by January 31st of each year.
A reward is being offered in a robbery in Vineland. Crime Stoppers is providing the $1,000 award to information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in a Christmas Eve robbery. An unknown male, who was wearing a shiny “puffy” jacket and dark colored ski mask, confronted an employee of the Zale’s Jewelry Store, as he was making a nightly deposit at the TD Bank (3850 S. Delsea Drive) located across the street from the Cumberland Mall. The accused was in possession of a small handgun as he demanded the deposit bag, which was stolen prior to the deposit being made. An undisclosed amount of money was taken during the robbery. The incident took place at 7:16 p.m.
A K9 unit in Vineland busted two on drug charges, after over 1,000 bags of heroin were found inside of a vehicle. Police developed a suspicion that narcotics were in the vehicle in the area of Sherman Ave. and Route 55. Jermaine Floyd (30), of the 1700 block of E. Broad St. in Millville, was found to be in possession of 20 bags of heroin in his pants pocket and Michelle Bradford (34), of the 100 block of Fern Wood Dr. in Pittsgrove, was found to be in possession of 4 bags of heroin in her purse. An additional 1,000 plus bag were found inside of the vehicle on Friday.
Next year is a big year for casinos in Atlantic City. Gov. Chris Christie said before the announcement of closing the Atlantic Club Casino that results needed to be seen in the resort or other options would have to be considered. Some members of the Assembly are pushing a study to look at putting a casino at the Meadowlands. Casinos currently can only be placed in Atlantic City. With a couple of other properties struggling, it is unclear what the resort’s future holds.
A new report says the state has made a big gamble on sports betting in New Jersey. The Star-Ledger says that the state has spent $2.3 million on its legal fight to bring sports betting to New Jersey. As of now, the only hope that remains is if the United States Supreme Court will hear the case. So far New Jersey has lost two decisions in the lower courts.
New scientific work by Rutgers University says that the sea level is rising quickly along the Jersey Shore. The overall sea level could rise 1.5 feet by 2050. Researchers say the increased sea level is significant because future storm events could bring about more and more flooding, unlike what any other storm in memory has brought.
Shooting injuries and deaths are down big time in Atlantic City. New numbers show that the murder rate in the resort hit a 30-year low this year and shooting injuries were down 30 percent. Three people were murdered in 2013 versus 18 the previous year.
Police in Vineland are searching for armed robbers who held up a Dollar Tree store on Saturday night. Police say the robbers went into the store late Saturday night and demanded money from the manager. They fled with some cash, no one was injured.
Vineland Police are investigating a robbery that occurred outside of TD Bank near the Cumberland Mall on Christmas Day. A jewelry store employee attempted to make a deposit at the bank but was confronted by another man outside the bank who was armed with a gun and demanded the money. The man ran off on foot with the loot towards a trailer park. As of now, police have no suspects in custody.
